The CT-SD16 CT Slice Detector from RTI Electronics is a new and
highly advanced detector for the evaluation of computed tomography
systems.

The CT-SD16 is designed
to be used with the Barracuda and the Piranha X-ray multimeter and a PC
running the CT-SD16 software. With the new probe and the software several
important parameters can be evaluated at the same time such as the CT dose
profile, CTDI100, CTDIvol and
FWHM. The CT-SD16 replaces the conventional TLD method for dose profile
measurements and makes it possible to evaluate modern CT scanners with multiple
beam apertures (wide beam) in real-time.
Background
Today computed tomography (CT) contributes with 70 % of the total dose
given to patients during X-ray examinations. With the rapid advancements
in CT technology new demands are being placed on the methods and equipment
that are used for quality assurance. It is time-consuming and complicated
to measure CT dose profile. Furthermore, the wide beam width found on
CT scanners with multiple beam aperature implies difficulties using existing
CT dose ionization chambers to measure CT dose and CTDI. Using a standard
10 cm CT ionization chamber may result in inaccurate measurements due
to underestimation of the dose profile for wide CT beams.
Existing Methods
The conventional method to measure CT dose profile is using TLDs. The
TLD method is very time-consuming and expensive since it requires both
preparation before and read-out after each scan. Another method used today
is the use of X-ray film for profile measurements that has some of the
same disadvantages as the TLD. The CT-SD16 from RTI Electronics has no
such limitations.

The CT-SD16 is based on solid-state technology, it is robust and it fits
into existing standard phantoms used for CTDI measurements. The CT-SD16
has two small detectors which are completely irradiated when the table
is moving. It measures the dose value at every position of the X-ray beam.
The CT-SD16 is connected to the electrometer module of a Barracuda and
is operated from the PC using the Barracuda CT Slice Detector Software.

Software
The software allows evaluation of the CT dose profile, the CT dose, the
CTDI100, CTDIvol, and the
AEC. It presents results, in both numerical and graphical format.
